Cycling Day 29: To Hiroshima
Around the coast to go and see the peace museum tomorrow. Suchern said it was really busy and a tip from a fellow traveller was to book to go at 7:30am to avoid the crowds, so I've booked that for tomorrow morning as well as 2 nights in a hostel there.
Wild camping last night worked out fine but for the sweet chestnut casings under my tent. Fortunately I dug most of them out, so my inflatable mattress survived the night! I worry about water dripping up through the floor in the future though! I remember camping on holly leaves in Ireland too - also best avoided if you spot them!

Stonemason
Nice, flowery park stop for breakfast
I think I delayed an old chap from doing his morning exercises though!
Oops, it did it again!
The bolt holding one side of my rear rack has sheared off again. It was part way through a long tunnel, but fortunately there was a nice pedestrian path in this one!
I'm just coming into a town, Kure, so hopefully I'll be able to find a replacement in a DIY store or bike shop...
Motorcycle shops!
The first motorcycle shop pointed me at a second, where the mechanic sorted me out with a nice, long replacement bolt, and a spare...just in case!
Now for some lunch - bread, cheese, carrot and cherry tomatoes at a shady riverside bench 🙂
Don Quixote
There's a Japanese shop called Don Quixote too!
Hijiyama Park Military Cemetery
This military cemetery has many Japanese WWII graves, but also German, French, and Chinese, and from other wars too.

Sanyo Bantokuden Memorial
The 1945 atomic bomb. It was 1.8km from the hypocentre.
The chery tree also survived, although it looks like there have been some interventions.
Peace Boulevard
A green path from the park to the peace garden. Although it does also have up to 6 lanes of traffic.

Hostel
The hostel only had a microwave and a kettle for cooking, but foraging the local supermarket, I ended up with quite a tasty veggie tofu meal, and rather a lot of it!
Unfortunately I lost my 2nd item today (1st being my tupperware and spork, accidentally left behind). My classic Casio watch with replacement cork strap, which I generally attach to my rucksack, fell off somewhere along the way today 🫤
