59 of these statues are designated as national treasures in Japan. They're estimated to be around 1200 years old or so. Quite a lot of preservation and some restoration work has been done, including putting the big Buddha here's head back on (may have fallen off in an earthquake in the 1600s!).

Not sure I named to capture the rising stream and colours on the mountains very well here!
Shelter & dessert
We stopped to shelter from some potential heavy rain in Oita at a Joyfun cafe. I had some fried burdock toy and we both had a small ice cream sundae 🙂
