Dag 26: Mesolongi - Kouroutas
The penultimate stage is tough again: 147km but only 570m of elevation gain. It will be 35°C and the wind is favorable.
After just 35km, I cross the strait into… the Peloponnese! Another mental step closer to Zephyros!
Mesolongi
This year, Mesolongi celebrates the 200th anniversary of the Exodus. At that time, all the inhabitants first fled the city en masse, away from the Ottomans, were subsequently pushed back by them, and finally blew up the gunpowder depot, committing collective suicide in the process, but also dragging numerous Ottomans to their deaths with them.
It became a turning point in the Greek struggle for independence.
Antirio-Rio Ferry
Despite the heat, I still got a shiver at the first sight of the bridge—the famous bridge from Antirion to Rion (near Patras). For the Peloponnese awaits me on the other side, and thus the very last chapter of the journey.
Cyclists are not allowed on the bridge and take the ferry for free.
Cool down
The advantage of a route along the sea is the (irresistible) opportunity to take a quick dip in the water. Swim trunks, flip-flops, and a micro-towel—it’s all set up in no time! Wonderful!
Arrival Kouroutas
In the end, it was 147km and 800m of elevation gain. After the ferry, I had to make my way through Patras, where cyclists are not well-known.
Then a long stretch along the beach, literally. After 80km, as hoped, I was able to have lunch/swim in Kalogria. We stayed there 52 years ago with the Kuppens and Buntinx families. Beautiful memories!
Finally, another 67km through beautiful nature, but also some boring roads. Fortunately, with a strong tailwind. An average of 35-40km/h, that's fun! As a result, I arrived just after 7am. Tired but satisfied.
Now for the last supper. Tomorrow the final stage of 133km to … Pylos!
