Day 36: Salceda -> Santiago!
The final day! 27km into Santiago, where we’ll join the pilgrims’ mass at the cathedral, and collect our Compostelas. Started at 5am - hopefully will be there by 11! Feeling snotty after a mouldy room
Santiago Spotted
Pitch black walk through forests. The lights of Santiago spotted over the hill. 16k to go.
28km In One Santia-Go
Paced it this morning - didn’t stop at all! A few vids of the approach (mainly featuring animals of course - we did admittedly stop to pet this loudly purring kitten, who wouldn’t?)
The Race To Mass
With a limited number of seats at the pilgrims’ mass (1000, so not that limited - but can you imagine having to stand after the walk), the last few miles into Santiago really did feel like a bit of a race.
Santiago de Compostela!
We MADE IT! James was taking it all in. I was obsessed with getting into the mass before seats ran out. (There were plenty of seats, and we were there 1.5 hours early. I had a great nap sat in a pew.) After mass we went on to get our Compostela certificates 🏅🏅
Celebrations!
A pile of octopus, a wine called Jésus (among others), an enormous nap, and a great traditional Galician band playing in the square to hordes of hobbling, happy pilgrims. WE DID IT! 🥳
