Kisokoma Camping

By David 路 Journey: Japan 2026 路 6 km

It's been a rather wet night and morning outside. Persistent drizzle though - the tent kept it out okay. It's 11am as I write this, and it's almost stopped drizzling 馃 Not sure whether to hike yet, or just laze around/read/plan...

Food

路 Japan

There was a little food truck selling some fruit and veg. I bought a small bag of potatoes for food on Sunday.

The campsite shop has one kind of instant noodles that appears to be veggie too. I can definitely survive a bit longer here without having to visit a supermarket 馃檪 Most of their snacks are uninspiringly light though (especially for somewhere you come to go hiking!). Weight is how I tend to judge snacks and treat food here; if it doesn't weight much, it's probably not worth having, and most things do seem to be very light. Even their baguettes/French bread feels very light and is soft rather than crusty. Thank goodness for mochi & red bean paste products!

Tick

路 Japan

Found another tick on my arm in the night. This one was tiny and not so cleanly removed. I'm very much hoping that the tiny mites I've seen crawling on my tent are just mites and not baby ticks, as there seem to be quite a few of them.

Campsite

路 Japan

The campsite is impressive! It doesn't have paid on-site staff and the shop, baths, etc. are paid for on trust. Volunteers come in to do some stuff around the place.

I'm camped on a mix of gravel and woodchip (the woodchip definitely helps!).

Having wandered up the hill a bit, there are lots more places you can pitch - it really is large! There's also an 'alpine' lodge with an onsen hot bath that's only 500 yen rather than 1000...but it's over 5 minutes walk uphill from where I've camped, so I'm not sure I'll use it.

River crossing

路 Japan

There were some signs warning this river could not be crossed when the river level is high - I can see why! I wanted to investigate as it was on one of the potential mountain hikes I'd plotted on my map.

It's a bit of a torrent at the moment. Probably crossable using the steel cable and suspended log, but it doesn't feel like a safe thing to try alone, and definitely not on a wet, drizzly day!

Ford

路 Japan

The main route up to the summits had a fod marked on my map, so I thought I'd check that out too. Definitely a ford!

It probably could be done as a boots-on crossing on the rocks a bit further up, but on a dry day when the rocks are less slippery...
