What is Adventure Travel?

"Adventure travel" is a loose term, so here's what we mean by it. It's a trip where you get yourself there, on foot, by bike, in a kayak or in a van, and the route matters as much as where you end up. It can be the other side of the world or a few miles from home. A few days walking a coast path counts. So does a long bike ride: our first was three months in 2017, cycling and wild camping through France and Spain to Gibraltar.

At its core, adventure travel revolves around:
- Being Active: Adventure travel is all about experiencing the world first-hand. This could mean hiking, biking, paddling, or even exploring in a campervan. It's about seeing the sights at your own pace and from your own perspective, whether that's on foot, on wheels, or from on the water. The idea is to be part of the landscape, not just passing by it.
- Connecting with Nature: Spending time outdoors is a big part of adventure travel. It's those moments of quiet in the natural world that remind us of its beauty and our place within it.
- Getting to Know the Culture: These trips let you peel back the layers of a place, meeting the people, tasting the food, and even picking up a few words of another language. It's about experiencing a place from the inside, not just scratching the surface.
- Learning as You Go: Adventure travel teaches you to be resilient, flexible, and open to new experiences. Every trip is a lesson in something, from practical skills to personal insights.
You don't need to be especially fit or brave. A lot of it is slow, and some days are a bit dull, which is part of it. What you do and who you meet on the way matter more than the pin on the map, and it doesn't have to be far from home to count.
Quick Tips for Adventure Travelers
Before you head out, keep these tips in mind to get the most out of your adventure:
- Plan a Little: Even though we love the idea of just going wherever the wind blows us, a bit of planning can go a long way. It helps ensure we don't overlook something crucial or miss the good bits along the way.
- Respect the Environment: Always try to leave places as you found them or even a bit nicer. This means taking away your rubbish, staying on trails, and being mindful of wildlife.
- Stay Safe: Know the basics of staying safe for whatever activity you're doing. This means checking the weather, knowing your limits, and having the right gear.
- Pack Smart: What you need will depend on your adventure, but some things are universal, like water, snacks, a first-aid kit, and layers for changing weather.
- Embrace Local Life: Getting to know the local scene can make your adventure even richer. A little effort to connect can go a long way.
