Trains to Nagoya

By David · Journey: Japan 2026 · 289 km

I'm on my way home...well, almost.
The approaching tropical storm/typhoon encouraged me to head to Nagoya (my flight home via Shanghai is from the Centerair airport near there) a day earlier than I might have otherwise.

But I'm at almost 1000m above sea level and it's dry this morning, so I'll cycle down the hill rather than catch a train from Fujimi itself; my last stretch of fully loaded cycle touring in Japan!

The bike will need to be packed into its bag to go on the trains.

It felt quite 1970s and a bit run-down, but was a pretty good place to stay and cheap for the area (only the campsite would have been cheaper that I could find, but it's website said it was closed on Mondays). It even had an onsen, although the lack of shower heads made washing a bit slower - had to use the old-school bowl method.

Took me a while to pack up the bike, and it's not got much padding to protect it for this journey - need to find myself some packaging materials while I'm in Nagoya...

I spent ages trying to buy a ticket at the machine, eventually putting to pay 2200 yen more than I think I needed to (paying for an express train which stops less) as the machine didn't seem to want to offer the JR-standard-only option (it may have right at the end though!). Then I missed the train from Okaya I'd been aiming for...but I guess I'm not in a hurry!

On my second train already

· Japan

Other than dropping my bike once, and it being really bulky lugging everything around, no problems with the luggage yet; just about enough room in the luggage storage area (it only sticks out a bit)!

The conductor even seemed happy with my ticket when I managed to dig it out!

The tropical storm hasn't reached this far yet. It may be raining in Nagoya already, but won't get really heavy until early tomorrow morning if the forecast is right.

The train is zipping past lots of the Nakasendo route post towns I walked and cycled through quite recently!

Hardest part of the journey

· Japan

Lugging this lot the 600m from the station to the hotel was quite hard work! At least there was a cooling drizzle to keep me from overheating quite so much (but not a tropical storm!).
