Cycling Day 8: More Amami Island
Beach camp
The beaches are lovely, but there's often quite a lot of rubbish on them, mostly washed up out of the sea I presume, although there is definitely a fly tipping/litter problem in some places too by the roadsides, etc. Japan's lack of public litter bins doesn't seem to make it any worse than the UK for litter, but it's a bit more frustrating for touring cyclists! Luckily most of the konbini (convenience store) have litter/recycling areas.
Plastic packaging is excessive and all apart from plastic bottles seems to go into the 'burnable' bin. Then they recycle cans, but maybe not other metals with them. Could be better on the main Japanese islands though I suppose...

Tomori beach
Could be a very good beach for snorkeling...maybe on a nicer day!

View from our campsite this evening
Kohama Campsite
This campsite by a nice beach and an aquarium sounds like it would be quite big and flashy, but, although it looks good, things are a bit basic. We do have it to ourselves though!
We both had a quick dip in the sea (my first of the trip!) before a cold shower and our evening meal.
The sea was cool, but warmer than I'd been expecting after Suchern's report - I managed to stay in and swim a little!
The showers, on the other hand, were freezing! Apparently there are no hot showers because it's a national park, but they could use solar or a heat pump if they wanted to couldn't they?
As they'd missed Suchern's email letting them know we were coming, the toilets were all locked up. Neither could we plug anything in to charge as the outdoor sockets were an awkward shape.
When we were washing up, before crawling into our tents to shelter from the rain, I spotted this guy just by the kitchen!
